The St. Simons Lighthouse is an iconic local landmark, famous for its scenic beauty and 129-step climb to the top. But many visitors ask about one famous (or infamous) resident: the Lighthouse’s ghost. As the sun sets on Halloween, will you be brave enough to learn the real story behind the Lighthouse’s spookiest occupant?
Families of the lighthouse keepers who lived and worked here believed in the ghost, who they tied to the real story of ill-fated former keeper Frederick Osborne. Our longest-tenured keeper family, the Svendsens, believed that their dog, Jinx, had a special sense for when the spirit was near. In honor of the story and of Jinx, bring your dogs to the Lighthouse lawn for this special annual program! Participants—two-legged and four-legged—will hear the story of the Svendsens and the ghost, followed by a dog parade along the Neptune Park waterfront to the St. Simons Pier. Images and stories of other dogs (and their humans) who called the St. Simons Lighthouse home will be on display.

Awards will be given for:
🐾Best In Show (Panel-Judged)
🎃Best In Show (Crowd’s Choice)
🐾Keeper’s Best Friend (Dog-Human Pair Costume)
🐕Jinx, Junior (Local History-Related Costume)
🦴Waterfront Wheels (Rolling Costume)
👻Keeper-In-Training (Under-12 and Dog Pair Costume)

The program will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 30, on the lawn of the St. Simons Lighthouse. Please meet by the Gazebo for a short presentation by Society staff. The parade will take dogs and their humans down the sidewalk from the Lighthouse to the St. Simons Pier, where the program will conclude by 4:00 p.m. Register for $15 per costume entry at coastalgeorgiahistory.org. One costume entry includes the entering pet and their accompanying human(s).
Multiple dogs may be registered together, as long as their costumes are meant to be judged as a group. Entering dogs must be leashed and friendly to both humans and other pets. Spectators are welcome to attend free of charge!
