DISCOUNT DISCO
DISCOUNT DISCO is a musical collaboration ten years in the making between DC native turned NYC resident, DJ Jouez! (Elise Edwards) and DC dance-scene staple, Sneakers in the Dryer (Eric Henderson).
Sneakers & Jouez met after attending what would historically be the last of the legendary seasonal MASSIVES at the Paradox in Baltimore in 2009.
Sneakers & Jouez initially bonded over their love of Big Beat revolutionaries THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS, dancefloor culture, and psychedelic adventure. They also learned that they each had sisters 10 years their senior, whom instilled in them a love for electronic music as early as elementary school. Jouez’s musical influences also include an eclectic mix of movie soundtracks, dance classes, NPR and early MTV. Sneakers' influences include classic Mo-town from growing up hearing his parents' favorite oldies station, video game soundtracks, and an impulse to collect music which resulted in a library that has grown continuously since middle school.
During a brief relocation to Denver in 2010, Jouez turned to the sky and asked, "what will bring to me happiness?" The answer she received was a sign with large lettering that said, 'DISCO.' She agreed. Jouez unearthed the rest of the sign and found the full lettering read 'DISCOUNT.' Armed with the name, DISCOUNT DISCO, Jouez planned to share and build her vision with Sneakers upon returning to the East Coast later that year. While back in DC, Jouez & Sneakers continued to trade and connect over music and shows, but their paths diverged in 2012, before DISCOUNT DISCO could actually take shape.
Then, in August of 2019, 7 years since their last dance floor rendezvous, Sneakers & Jouez reunited for The Chemical Brother’s performance in NYC for Jouez’s birthday, and again a month later to see Sneaker’s hero, James Murphy (LCD SOUNDSYSTEM, DFA) spin live B2B with The Black Madonna for his birthday.
Upon reuniting, Sneakers & Jouez gained a new appreciation for one another’s complementary skill sets and approaches to both music and life. Sneakers' highly technical approach reflects his background in architecture and general enthusiasm for building sound, knowledge, and energy. Jouez’s lifetime in performance and spiritual arts brings soul and storytelling to DISCOUNT DISCO’s sound, often jumping timelines, cultures, and vibe.
Now in 2020, united under the name Spirit sent Jouez! in 2010 and intent on integrating and sharing all they love & have learned both on and off the dance floor, DISCOUNT DISCO invites you to gather ‘round the great Urban campfire known as the Disco Ball & let your RAGE/JOY swing.
