Join us for an afternoon watch party presented by the Ron "G. Wiz" Butts. G. Wiz is one of the most respected DJ's in St. Louis, Missouri, who's career has spanned over 4 decades. Specializing in multiple genres of music from the 1960's, through 2000.
“Background Check” uncovers the untold story of hip hop’s rise in St. Louis and East St. Louis from 1979 to 1995—a journey of rhythm, resistance, and raw creativity. Long before platinum hits and global fame, this metro area fostered a grassroots movement that blended Midwest grit with Southern soul and East and West Coast lyrical influence. This documentary traces the pioneering radio DJs, MCs, dancers, and promoters who built the foundation of a regional sound in basement parties, community centers, roller rinks, and underground clubs.
Through rare photos and interviews “Background Check” reveals how the cultural and economic realities of both cities shaped the voice of generations. From neighborhood battles to radio roll call, this is a story of innovation born in overlooked places—of artists who never waited for coasts to call, but carved out their own lanes in the American hip hop timeline.
"Background Check" was awarded the American Association of State & Local History Award for the state of Missouri.
