A documentary screening of Treasure from the Bog followed by an in conversation with the Library’s interim Head of Preservation and Conservation, Dr John Gillis on the discovery and conservation of the medieval treasure Faddan More Psalter.
In July 2006, a highly significant archaeological discovery was made in a bog at Faddan More, Co. Tipperary. The remains of an illuminated manuscript from the early medieval period were discovered by chance during turf-cutting operations. The find made international headlines and today represents one of the National Museum of Ireland's most significant treasures.
The manuscript which has become known as the Faddan More Psalter − was a book of psalms dating to the late eighth century. It was found in a water-logged state in a bog and posed unique challenges for the Conservation Department at the National Museum of Ireland.
Interim Head of Preservation and Conservation and Chief Manuscript Conservator, Dr John Gillis at the Library of Trinity College Dublin was seconded for this nationally significant project.
The RTÉ documentary, Treasure from the Bog by Crossing the Line Films captures the slow reveal of the bog-encrusted treasure to its final conservation.
Dr Gillis also chronicled this magnificent journey in his book The Faddan More Psalter: The Discovery and Conservation of a Medieval Treasure’.
Booking essential. Tickets are free but book soon to avoid disappointment.
