Ne gândim adesea la democrație ca la un sistem politic în care, o dată la câțiva ani, poți vota unul dintre mai multe partide sau politicieni care să îți reprezinte interesele la nivel local, regional sau național. Dar oare chiar la asta se gândeau grecii antici când au inventat termenul? Sau este o versiune extrem de diluată a democrației, care se dă drept lucrul autentic, în timp ce puterea reală se concentrează tot mai mult în mâinile unei mici elite de oligarhi? În „Can We Do It Ourselves?” suntem invitați să privim democrația ca pe un principiu filozofic care ar trebui aplicat în toate domeniile vieții, inclusiv în cel economic. Dacă respingem dictatorii autoritari la conducerea statului, de ce i-am accepta la conducerea companiilor?

We often think of democracy as a political system where, every few years, you get to vote on one of several political parties or politicians to represent your interests at the local, regional, or national level. But is this really what the ancient Greeks had in mind when they coined the term? Or is this an extremely watered down version of democracy masquerading as the real thing while actual power is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small elite of oligarchs? In "Can We Do It Ourselves?", we are invited to think of democracy as a philosophical principle that should be applied to all realms of life, including the economic realm. If we reject authoritarian dictators running our state, why should we accept them running our companies?
DiEM25 (Democracy in Europe Movement 2025) is a pan-European political movement trying to save democracy from oligarchs.
