Join us on November 19, 2024, for a book reading and discussion with Patricia Aufderheide, author of the new book "Kartemquin Films: Documentaries on the Frontlines of Democracy", tracing the five decade history of the venerable Chicago documentary production company.Kartemquin Films, established in 1966 in Chicago, is one of the longest-running and most influential independent documentary production companies in the U.S. Renowned for its focus on social issues, Kartemquin has shaped the history of independent documentary filmmaking and played a crucial role in media policy, including the creation of ITVS, public access TV, and filmmakers' fair use.
Kartemquin's films have earned prestigious awards, including Oscar nominations, Emmys, Peabodys, and Sundance Film Festival honors. Notably, Hoop Dreams—one of its most acclaimed films—famously did not receive an Oscar nomination, sparking controversy. Despite challenges in the documentary field, Kartemquin’s enduring influence is rooted in the vision and leadership of co-founder Gordon Quinn and collaborative efforts over six decades.
