DOCo: Launch Event

is a documentary community that meets in Edinburgh to screen, network and discuss everything documentary in an informal social gathering. Inspired by DocKlub, we will be hosting a free event on the first Wednesday of every month upstairs at , Edinburgh.

We like to host work in progress feedback sessions, workshops, screenings of great vintage shorts that are sitting somewhere on dusty hard drives and films hot off the festival circuit…anything to get to know each other’s work, inspire each other and stimulate conversations and collaborations.

To kick-start DOCo, please join us on the 9th July for our DOCo: Launch Night to see a dynamic selection of short documentaries made by exciting award winning directors based in Scotland. Each film will be introduced by the filmmaker, followed by a gathering after the screenings. So please seek them out after to chat with them about their films! We will have plenty of time to grab a drink and get to know each other!

Films Being Screened

Beyond the Words (2024) directed by Maryam Haddadi

Commissioned by Refugee Festival Scotland, Beyond the Words explores Iranian women’s individual mental health and collective identity. It seeks to uncover the world that exists behind simple words, words shared by women in conversations as well as words found in the media. Maryam’s piece narrates the story of 3 Iranian women, one being herself, celebrating through these, and delving into, a lineage of women’s courage and solidarity.

Maria’s Way (2010) directed by Anne Milnes

Is a BAFTA Award winning short film about a woman, María, who sits by the side of the road behind a rickety, homemade stall, her expression a blend of forbearance and exasperation. She greets passers- by and invites them to stop, to spend a few minutes with her as they continue on down the road. They are pilgrims and have a long, arduous journey ahead of them, on the ancient Camino de Santiago. María’s encounters with the passing strangers allow us to catch a glimpse of the modern pilgrim. Despite encountering some difficult pilgrims throughout her day, María nobly continues her task.

Taking Stock (2017) directed by Duncan Cowles

This award winning film was commissioned as part of Channel 4’s Random Acts TV Series. Using his failed attempts at creating profitable stock footage, a filmmaker reflects on the absurd, mundane and funny side of being trapped inside your own head as an out of work, self-employed freelancer.

The Long Winter (2022) directed by Eilidh Munro

A BAFTA winning observational documentary that explores what we’re willing to sacrifice to create a better future, even if we don’t personally benefit from it. Created as part of the Scottish Documentary Institute’s Bridging the Gap scheme. We will be joined by the film’s editor Kieran Gosney for a short introduction.
