DNA Isolation and Extraction & Red Blood Cell Analysis

In this session, students will undergo a scientific journey to visually examine how much DNA is in common food items we eat and the evolutionary significance of red blood cells. Students will be given the tools to extract DNA from strawberries and/or cherry tomatoes as well as process blood smears, stain slides, and examine the contents of the slide under the microscope.

About Extreme STEAM Saturdays:

Each carefully curated session provides participants with interactive experiences in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design, and Mathematics) fields.

• Sessions are open to high school students of all ages.
• Each session starts promptly at 10:00am and runs until approximately 12:30pm.
• Lunch is provided - Please inform us of any participant dietary concerns as soon as possible.
• Signs will help direct you to the correct location on and around campus.

Attendees must be picked up promptly at 12:30pm

Participants in all LTU events must complete the program consent form below. Participants under the age of 18 must have a signature of a parent/guardian.

Campus Map and Parking:

Please use Parking Lot E for drop-off and pick-up since it is the closest to the program location. The STEM Center is located in the Taubman Complex (Building 8 on the map below).

Eventbrite's fees are nonrefundable. The refund process is fully automated and if you choose a refund to your original payment method, Eventbrite's fees will be automatically deducted from the order refund. However, you can also choose a credit for a future ESS session to avoid the nonrefundable fee deductions. Credits never expire.
