Они стоят перед глазами рядом с самыми счастливыми переживаниями — первые свидетельства трагедии мира, первые вести о невосполнимой утрате. Они пришли раньше слов; они стоят за словами; они разделяют твоё опустошение, не произнося ни звука».

«Как выглядит смерть» Дмитрия Строцева состоит из четырнадцати коротких текстов, находящихся на границе между поэзией и прозой; сам автор называет это произведение поэмой. Расположенные в хронологическом порядке — от младенчества до старших школьных лет — тексты прослеживают решающие моменты жизни автора, моменты исключительной силы, когда он впервые сталкивается с трагической реальностью и навсегда меняется под её воздействием.

Война, смерть, насилие — эти темы приходят раньше понимания; они вплетаются в ткань детской жизни, в жизнь мальчика из Минска, не дожидаясь, пока он вырастет. И кажется, что только изумлённая, нежная отзывчивость к миру позволяет герою сохранить доверие и хрупкую радость в своём сердце.

Говоря об этих потрясениях — из глубины детского опыта — Строцев обращается к поэтическим средствам: рефренам, текстовым повторам, строфам, выстроенным ритмом и интонацией.

Эта книга Дмитрия Строцева, известного поэта, издана белорусским издательством в изгнании Miane Nema. По объёму она напоминает школьную тетрадь и оформлена соответствующим образом. Обложка в школьном стиле максимально приближает читателя к возрасту рассказчика — к голосу мальчика. И к голосу внутреннего ребёнка внутри каждого из нас.

Книга издана при поддержке израильского издательства Babel. Как пишет на обороте книги директор проекта Евгений Коган:

Dmitri Strotsev's overdue birthday and the presentation of his book "What Death Looks Like."

It's significant when the birth of a book and the birth of its author coincide. Because the birth of a book is always both the author's rebirth and, literally, a birth certificate.

Creative friends Sveta Ben, Alexander Delfinov, Tanya Skarynkina, Alik Danziger, Heinrich Kirshbaum, and Zhenya Kogan will congratulate the newborns. There will be songs, poems, performances, and attractions.

WHAT DEATH LOOKS LIKE

“There are events that do not turn into memories, that do not retreat into the archives of the mind. They lie on the ‘desktop’ of consciousness—no matter how you change over the course of your life, no matter how many new upheavals distract you. They stand before your eyes, coexisting with your happiest experiences—the first testimonies to the tragedy of the world, the first tidings of irreparable loss. They arrived before words; they stand behind words; they share your devastation without speaking.”

Dmitry Strotsev’s What Death Looks Like consists of fourteen short texts poised on the threshold between poetry and prose; the author himself calls the work a poem. Arranged in chronological order—from infancy to the later school years—the book traces decisive moments in the author’s life, moments of exceptional force in which he first came into contact with tragic reality and was irreversibly changed by it. War, death, violence—these themes arrive before comprehension itself; they weave into the fabric of a child’s life, into the life of a boy from Minsk, without waiting for him to grow up. And it seems that only a startled, tender responsiveness to the world allows the hero to preserve trust and a fragile joy in his heart.

To speak of these upheavals—out of the depths of childhood experience—Strotsev turns to poetic devices: refrains, textual repetitions, and stanzas shaped by rhythm and intonation.

This book by Dmitry Strotsev, a well-known poet, is published by the Belarusian publishing house in exile Miane Nema. Notebook-sized in volume, it is designed to resemble a school exercise copybook. The school-style cover brings the reader as close as possible to the narrator’s age—to the boy’s voice. And to the voice of the inner child within oneself.

The book is published with the support of the Israeli publishing house Babel. As the project’s director, Evgeny Kogan, writes on the back cover:

“In this autobiographical poem in prose, Dmitry Strotsev seems to be speaking about his own childhood, which only appeared carefree; in truth, he is speaking of a ‘mythical Minsk’—an unattainable mirage-city preserved in memory. These brief poetic sketches, forming a single text of wondrous beauty, move one to tears, because each of us has a city of childhood of our own, and for many of us it now exists only in memory—there, forever.”
