YURIKO HIGA
My name is Yuriko , I am from Peru and have been living in NY for 20 years. When I was 8 years old, I fell passionately in love with dance through the folkloric music of my country. Dance, for me, has become a way to heal and to embrace my body. Through dance and music, I also found a valuable connection to different cultures and ways to express myself. I started my belly dance journey about 4 years ago and became more determined to continue it when I attended my first Djam NYC event. I was inspired by seeing all the dancers performing, including the students. I asked myself if one day it would also be possible for me to perform there. I also met amazing instructors who have been part of my journey such as Gabriela Figueroa and Natalie Nazario. I also focus a lot of time learning Afro Cuban rhythms, which provides me with strength and a connection to my ancestors.
