DIY Lawn Conversion Workshop: Day 1

Join us February 8 to learn about sustainable landscape design and help install a water efficient garden based on permaculture principles in Fairfield!

This public, hands-on installation workshop series to replace a water thirsty lawn with shade trees and plantings can lead to better air quality. This workshop will create a demonstration water efficient garden in Fairfield providing an opportunity to learn about rainwater capture, water efficient drip irrigation and how to plant and mulch to create a water wise, resilient garden that builds healthy soil and provides habitat for pollinators and shade for the community!

Day 1: Saturday, Feb 8-Earthworks

The focus of this day will be laying the foundation of this demo garden. Learn how to create swales, which are trenches that capture rainwater in the ground, divert roofwater to those swales and sheet mulch to protect and build healthy soil.

Volunteer tasks: digging a swale, moving and spreading wood chips.

* wear closed toe shoes, bring gloves and a refillable water bottle

* Lunch will be provided, bring your own lunch if you have special dietary needs

*this event is designed for ages 12 & up

The focus this day will be learning about the plants selected and how to install drip irrigation. We will be learning about native plants and selecting the best trees to create shade.

Volunteer tasks: planting, moving wood chips and installing irrigation

***As part of the second day of installation, additional free trees may be provided to Fairfield residents to help improve air quality and reduce the impact of the urban heat island effect. Residents will also have the opportunity to give feedback on a community air quality action plan.
