In this talk, Yap Sau Bin will explore the concepts of vortex and porosity as methods for understanding the distribution of sensemaking in the Malaysian art scene and its diverse practices. The notion of the vortex characterises a dynamic axis of fluidity, traversing space and time with intensity and motion. This perspective suggests that contemporary art practices are non-static, fluctuate, always in motion, and permeable, interacting with and reacting to various cultural and social forces. These interactions amplify or magnify the effects of the vortex, or otherwise.
Yap Sau Bin will delve into how art practices can be thematized in relation to discussions of temporality, spatiality, bodies, and the techniques of mediation. By considering these elements, the presentation aims to provide a cursory understanding to aspects of the varied contemporary art practices in Malaysia.
