Lecture Details

A brief survey of women composers from Hildegard to Higdon. In contradiction to Jean Jacques Rousseau, Dr. Ruby Morgan asserts that genius is not gender oriented. It grows out of a collective social, political, cultural, religious, educatinoal continuum.

The art historian Linda Nochlin posed a perceptive parallel question to, "Why have there been no great women artists?" Namely, "Why have there been no great artists from the aristocracy?" This session targets the prevailing conditions which inhibited women's musical genius, as well as highlights the achievements of a selected group of remarkable women composers/performers who were contemporaries of many of the instruments in the Sigal Music Museum collection. This lecture will include musical examples of the history of women's contributions.

About Ruby Morgan

Ruby Morgan, Furman Music Professor Emerita, shines a spotlight on women composers in the classical music world through performance and word. This survey reaches beyond the usual few and includes many who were contemporaries of Mozart and Hayden. The museum’s collection of keyboard instruments includes many of the type used by these composers, providing additional highlights and understanding of the work of these important composers.
