About this Event

IUPUI Black Women's Taskforce presents:

Dissin’ Black Women | Black Women's Readers Theatre

Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 6 p.m. Doors 5:30 p.m.

Madam Walker Legacy Center

Free and open to the public

One Night Only! Black Women’s Readers Theatre performs “Dissin’ Black Women: The Stories Behind Our Disappearance, Dismissal, Disqualification, Disenfranchisement and Disposability.”

Readers theatre is a style of performance in which the actors present dramatic readings of narrative material without costumes, props, scenery or special lighting. Actors use only scripts and vocal expression to help the audience understand the story. Our production of "Dissin' Black Women" will be performed by these community leaders:

  • Mercedes Cannon
  • Gina Sánchez Gibau
  • Tabitha Hardy
  • Ronda Henry
  • Nouri McLucas
  • Khalilah Shabazz

While this is an event that centers Black women, all are welcome to attend.

Join us in person Tuesday, April 30, at 6 p.m. at the Madam Walker Legacy Center.

Brought to you by the IUPUI Black Women's Task Force and the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

IMPORTANT EVENT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Indiana Avenue is currently under construction. As a result, only one lane is open for car traffic and drivers can only travel one way toward West Street.

Parking is still free, but lot entry has changed. The Urban League and the Madam Walker Legacy Center share a parking lot. Due to the Cultural Trail expansion along Indiana Avenue, the lot entrance near the MWLC building is closed. Cars may only use the entrance at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Blackford Street, and the entrance off West Saint Claire Street. Please see the map below.

The typical sidewalk path to Madam Walker Legacy Center has also changed. Currently, there is a temporary sidewalk created by industrial barriers that loops around the construction and through the blocked lane on Indiana Avenue. You can also walk through the shared parking lot with the Urban League. See map below.

Once you reach the MWLC building, enter through the main entrance, near the bygone ticket booth. The curb has been adapted to suit wheelchair and other mobility device users. Once inside the theatre, follow the rope barrier to the elevator. There will be signage on site to denote these changes.

As an FYI, we do not have control over this project, and the construction – and consequently, building access routes – may change at any time. Literally, any time. So if there are additional changes day-of, we will send out an email with that information.
