Displaced, Not Defeated: Reclaiming Economic Power for Black Women

As part of the Boston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s May Week 2026, themed Excellence by Design, this program, “Displaced, Not Defeated: Reclaiming Economic Power for Black Women,” explores how we expand the definition of work, ownership, and opportunity in today’s evolving economy.

Across the country, more than 300,000 Black women are navigating layoffs, automation, and caregiving responsibilities. This event reframes those realities not as setbacks, but as a moment to rethink pathways to stability, wealth, and ownership.

The evening will feature:

• A presentation by Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman, sharing insights from The Double Tax
• A fireside chat with Anna and Allegra Stennett (New Majority Capital), exploring barriers in the labor market and pathways to ownership, including business acquisition
• Moderation by Christine M. Slaughter, Ph.D, guiding a dynamic and engaging conversation
• A networking and resource session to connect with advisors, organizations, and peers

Attendees will also have access to on-site resources and vendors, including:

• Goodwill Boston Career Services, connecting job seekers with employment opportunities
• Financial services professional Kathy Martindale (New York Life Securities), offering guidance on financial planning and wealth building
• The American Cancer Society’s VOICES of Black Women Study, a groundbreaking national effort to enroll 100,000 Black women and advance research to improve health outcomes across the nation

Together, we will explore both traditional and nontraditional routes to employment, entrepreneurship, and economic mobility.

In addition, this event will include a brief introduction to the American Cancer Society’s VOICES of Black Women Study. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more and connect at an informational table during the event. Use BAC referral code 2101 when registering for the study.
