Scene of every coronation since 1066, Westminster Abbey will be the focus of attention this May 6th for the crowning of King Charles III. On this tour Gavin will explain the symbolism of the coronation service and show you the key locations in the ceremony.

The abbey is one of the finest gothic buildings in the world, and is the burial place of monarchs, writers, politicians, scientists and composers. We will explore this architectural gem and look at its amazing collection of monumental sculpture. There are works by artists such as Torrigiano, Rysbrack, Roubiliac and Epstein dating from the renaissance to the twentieth century. Gavin will put the memorials into context by telling us the stories of some of the important people who are commemorated.

The visit will also include a guided tour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries with their views of the Abbey — once described by John Betjeman as "the best view in Europe"! The galleries contain wonderful treasures including medieval carvings and manuscripts, architectural plans and a fourteenth-century book designed to help people organise and run a coronation.

PLEASE NOTE: you need to book and pay for the entrance to Westminster Abbey in addition to the tour fee. This is not included in your London Art Salon ticket price. A link will be provided in the booking confirmation.
