Hike through Canadian History on McNabs Island!
Sunday July 31 2022 - 9:30-3:30am
Departure Location: Eastern Passage : Meet at A&M Sea Charters, 87 Government Wharf Rd, Fisherman's Cove no later than 9:15 AM. The boat will depart promptly at 9:30 AM and leave the island at 3:30 PM to return to Eastern Passage by 4:00 PM.
Join the Friends of McNabs Island for a guided hike through Canadian history in the NORTH END of McNabs Island! Learn about the important role McNabs Island played for the Mi’kmaq First Nations, the early French settlers, and the British, who built several forts on the island. Visit historic Fort Ives where 800 soldiers stood on guard protecting the Port of Halifax during WWI.
Tour the grounds of the historic Conrad and Lynch houses and discover where Bill Lynch, the Midway King, got his start in the fairground business. Walk out to Hugonin Point for a spectacular view of Halifax Harbour. Learn about the SS England, stricken with cholera, that was quarantined off McNabs Cove in 1866.
Visit the 19th century Victorian Gardens and get a sneak peak at how we've restored the abandoned Teahouse transforming it into an Outdoor Education Centre. And at the end of the tour, stroll along Maugers Beach and watch the tide roll in.
Dress for the weather and island environment. Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. The island's trails are rough in some places because storms have washed rocks up onto the trails. Visitors should expect to walk at least 5 km on this hike.
Bring sunscreen, sunhats, insect repellent, plenty of drinking water, and a lunch. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash at all times. Smoking tobacco or cannabis and the consumption of alcohol are prohibited in the provincial park.
Everyone must get their tickets in advance. Tickets are also needed for babies and toddlers 3 years and younger, who will travel for free, courtesy of the Friends of McNabs Island.
Note: a second guided tour from 10:30-4:30 will be added if there is a demand.
There is NO rain date and there are NO refunds. However, in the event of heavy rain or gale force winds, OR if the park is closed, OR if Nova Scotia Public Health brings in restrictions on group gatherings, the tour will be cancelled and tickets refunded.
Cost: $30 (members of the Friends of McNabs Island), $20 (children/youth under 16), $35 (non-members). Babies and toddlers 3 years old and younger are free, but still need a ticket.
