Then the show: Disaster Passport Plays “Koyaanisqatsi”
In 2018, working alone and together, members of the Madison-based world music quartet Disaster Passport composed an original score to the 1982 experimental film “Koyaanisqatsi.” The film was directed by Godfrey Reggio. The original soundtrack was written and performed by New York avant-garde composer Philip Glass. The word “Koyaanisqatsi” is a Hopi Indian term for “life out of balance.” With scenes of crowded urban settings and wide open western U.S. landscapes, Reggio set out to explore the tenuous relationship people have with each other and their environment. There is no dialogue. Disaster Passport will play their soundtrack live to the movie with a sonic collage of electric banjos, baritone guitar, African percussion, and live vocal loops.
Filmmaker Kate Arpke Houle unravels her father’s unusual childhood inside a rural Wisconsin mental hospital, where he and his siblings grew up among patients. Not Abandoned explores family, resilience, and confronting darkness with curiosity in this unfolding Midwestern tale. This sizzle reel offers a glimpse into the documentary film currently in production.
