Join Disarm, Defund, Dismantle: Police Abolition in Canada (Between the Lines) anthology editor Kevin Walby and a panel of local organizers for a discussion of abolitionist campaigns and successes on Treaty 1 territory and beyond, with contributions from members of Winnipeg Police Cause Harm, Justice 4 Black Lives Winnipeg, and the Sex Workers of Winnipeg Action Coalition.
Leon Laidlaw (he/they) is a Ph.D. Candidate at Carleton University and part-time contract instructor. His work weaves together the fields of trans studies, critical criminology (abolition), and settler colonial studies. He is a white settler, queer and trans man born and currently residing on Treaty 1 Territory (Winnipeg). He is a captain with the Mama Bear Clan Patrol and a member of the Winnipeg Police Cause Harm.
Ella Taylor (she/they) is a Criminal Justice honours student at the University of Winnipeg. She has worked in a variety of Winnipeg non-profit organizations, and has organized with Justice4BlackLivesWinnipeg and the Abolitionist Futures Collective. They are Gurage, born and raised on Treaty 1 territory, with familial connections in Treaty 5 Territory. She is passionate about harm reduction, the liberation of all marginalized peoples, and horror movies!
The Sex Workers of Winnipeg Action Coalition (SWWAC) is made up of very careful and responsible drivers. SWWAC’s goal is to make things safer for sex workers in Winnipeg. They are a cat-loving, awesome bunch who first came together to fight against Bill C-36 in 2014. From 2014 to early 2017, they were known as the Winnipeg Working Group for Sex Workers’ Rights.
