For nearly 25 years, extraordinary Los Angeles punk-pop coven GO BETTY GO have charted a remarkable course through the rock and roll jungle. The all-female quartet’s adventurous, unpredictable journey has been characterized by a key attribute: authenticity, a quality which lends their music a distinctive, arresting and instantly recognizable sound.
The arrival of their high-impact 6 track Black & Blue EP marks another bold, delightful step forward in the GBG odyssey; siblings Aixa and Nicolette Vilar, as malcontent teens chafing under the yoke of high school’ ignominy, wanted to start a band and after meeting gregarious guitar swashbuckler Betty Cisneros (a certified rap/hip-hop/punk/pophead) and quiet, sincere bassist Michelle Rangel, whose finger picking packs a punch, the four converged in a Glendale garage in 2000 and quickly found their way—and band name, a spontaneous mid-rehearsal incantation.
The resultant luminous, banging set of original, bilingual songs—emotionally expressive, melodically urgent, impressively crafted—caught the collective ear of Los Angeles’ famously impassive club habitués and refused to let go. The band gained traction with live in-studio appearances on local Latin Alternative television station LATV and landed a Tuesday night residency at Highland Park’s Mr. T’s Bowl, a charmingly ratty dive central to the city’s exotic rock & roll underworld.
Drawing capacity crowds and perfecting their fiery, captivating sound, Go Betty Go’s ascent was swift and steady; 2004’s Worst Enemy debut EP built considerable momentum and the following year’s full length, classic Nothing is More disk cemented the band as a nationally recognized force. Here’s where it gets crazy—despite reams of positive press, video game song placements, two successive slots on coast-to-coast Warped Tours—just as they were embarking on a national tour with MxPx, Nicolette abruptly quit, split, left it all behind.
As she pursued a successful graphic art career, Aixa, Michelle and Betty brought in electric singer Emily Wynne-Hughes for a well-received incarnation. The band was additionally stunned when Michelle subsequently departed; bassist Phil Buckman joined up, but GBG eventually took an extended hiatus. Inevitably, a one-off, just for fun gig reuniting the four founders turned out to be Go Betty Go’s official resurrection. They joyously roared back to life, issuing the irresistible 2015 Reboot EP and resumed roadlife—now with the benefit of Nicolette’s eye-catching poster art.
Having already bested desperate hindrance, GBG next faced far worse trouble—Betty’s stage 4 cancer diagnosis. The dire challenge only drew them closer together, launching multiple fundraising efforts, performing benefits (with first-rate rocker Adam Bones filling in on ax) and doing everything in their spiritual and physical power to fight for Betty’s wellbeing.
Betty’s distinctive, powerful and deliciously unconventional guitar style has always been the band’s driving force and on Black and Blue, she’s reached dizzying new heights of dynamic six-string prowess. It’s a compelling set of the fast-moving, communicative punk-pop purity which defines GBG’s approach and attitude: liberated, free-wheeling, spontaneous and, above all else, completely honest.
Conceived and executed under some harrowingly difficult circumstances, Black and Blue represents Go Betty Go’s inexhaustible dedication and resilience, qualities which imbue each track with an electrifying appeal. In a characteristically unpredictable move, the disk also features a guest appearance by Emily Wynne-Hughes (on “City Lights,” “Am I to Blame”), illustrating the warm, tribal spirit which typifies the Go Betty Go sisterhood. As Aixa puts it: “There are no rules—we go as we please.”

THE LORDS OF ALTAMONT bring forth raw rock and roll fury birthed from the ultimate end to the era of peace and love. What was billed to be the “Woodstock of the West “, the infamous Altamont Free concert on December 6th, 1969 was highlighted instead by heavy drugs , motorcycle chains and brass knuckles and later punctuated with shoving matches and fist fights. This palpable sense of bawdy foreboding resulted in four births, four deaths and extensive property damage.
While the hippies had been grooving and mellowing out in the Bay Area, the forefathers of the Lords of Altamont were playing high energy rhythms in the beer soaked venues of Detroit and the dingy clubs along LA’s Sunset Strip. Mid-60s London RnB shares equal space with the scruffy 70s NYC Bowery among the influences of The Lords also. They take their other cues from kids banging out primitive riffs on cheap guitars all across the USA in garages alongside chopped bikes and American v-8 muscle, lingering exhaust fumes mixing with sweat to conjure the rare elixir of real rock n roll.
The story of the band who would come to be known as The Lords of Altamont gets a proper start in late 1999. A son of Southern California and a veteran of the SoCal music scene, Jake Cavaliere - with numerous bands and projects from garage to punk dating back to the late 80s under his belt - enlisted fellow motorcycle rider and bandmate of the instro/surf sensation The Bomboras, Johnny DeVilla. Besides holding their first show at the legendary venue The Garage in Hollywood, high points include touring as the support act for their primitive rock n roll idols The Cramps, infamous rock gods The Who as well as counting the late Michael Davis of the MC5 as a past member.
Through personnel changes featuring an incredible roster of talent, and various adventures over the past 23+ years, The Lords of Altamont continue to evolve their sound while staying true to their roots. Jake Cavaliere , along with his assemblage of gritty and talented personalities, continues to captivate audiences with unparalleled hard driven performances the world over.
