About this Event

In 1963, renowned American sculptor Chaim Gross and his wife Renee moved from their home of twenty years on the Upper West Side to one in Greenwich Village that they designed to serve as both Chaim's studio and their home. For many decades, Gross used the first floor to work and exhibit his major wood, stone, and bronze sculptures. After his passing in 1991, it was meticulously preserved to reflect the studio as it looked when it was in active use. It's time to explore this multi-story home — the only space of its kind in New York City — dedicated to the life and process of artist Chaim Gross.

Join New York Adventure Club for an exclusive tour of the Renee & Chaim Gross Foundation located just steps away from Manhattan's Washington Square Park.

Led by the Executive Director of the Foundation, our special exploration of this historic home and studio will include:

  • A close look at Chaim Gross' original sculptures throughout the Foundation
  • T he story of how Renee & Chaim Gross' home came together, including their work with architects Arthur Malsin and Don Reiman to convert an industrial building to residential use
  • A walkthrough of the Greenwich Village home and studio, from the first floor sculpture studio and gallery, to the second floor special exhibition Artists and Immigrants, to the third floor living and dining spaces
  • A visit to the Grosses' extensive private art collection — which includes important American paintings by Marsden Hartley, Willem de Kooning, Milton Avery, Jacob Lawrence — as well as African, Pre-Columbian, Oceanic, and decorative arts
  • A behind-the-scenes look at areas throughout the home and studio not regularly shown to the public, including Chaim's office/cubby replete with original sketches and notes, drawers with his ephemera, and rare archival materials

See you there!

" It was fascinating and because there were only three of us, we got a highly personalized tour during which we could talk and ask any number if questions. The staff was wonderful. This place is a NYC jewel that I had no idea existed (although I did know who Chaim Gross was). Thanks for offering this. I learned so much and had a wonderful time." -Elizabeth

" My husband and I both loved everything about the experience! The Director is very knowledgeable, affable, and an excellent communicator and advocate for the Gross family & their work. There is an enormous amount of Mr. Gross's work and collections on view as well as a vast amount of other artists' work. It was a feast for the eyes and brain! The Foundation is a secret gem and now that I know about it one of my favorite places in the city!" -Lisa

"Interesting place. The tour guide (who was the director) was extremely good" -Lorraine
