Dimensional Duet
Long time friends and collaborators, Robert L. Pepper and Damien Olsen Berdichevsky, team up for a collaborative project exploring various physical and metaphysical dimensions of space and time at J-Collabo in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Painting and sculpture are the mediums to record each artist’s visionary worlds, which reflect their own personal alternative realities and offer a view into their imaginary worlds of beauty and complexities. Inspired by esoteric philosophies like Kabbalah and Hermeticism both artists reflect upon these concepts and embed their principles and influences within their works.
The artists offer a view into other layers of existence past our mundane reality, with reflections on physics, esoteric literature, psychoanalysis, meditation and scientific concepts expressed in symbolism and otherworldly landscapes.
Their worlds merge at J-Collabo/Ossam Gallery for the first time complementing each other’s work and join both visionary worlds seamlessly. They are two architects working on two hemispheres of an imaginary realm, bringing into focus a glorious view from an alternative world of their own design.
Damien Olsen Berdichevsky
Damien Olsen Berdichevsky is a multi-disciplinary artist born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1961 to a Ukrainian immigrant family. He studied Psychology and Dance Theater at the University of Buenos Aires. In 1980, Olsen moved to Brazil and continued to study at the University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil. Later he lived in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. And studied Capoeira and African Arts. Olsen studied Zen and History of Buddhism at Shobo-An Zen Center in Cordoba, Argentina, 1986-89. Afterwards, he returned to Bahia. In 1999 Damien moved to New York and became an American citizen. Throughout the years, he has consistently continued to produce art and music. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Each finished piece of my work radiates its own unique presence and attitude. The arrangement of objects, the light, the emptiness, the atmosphere, all play a part in evoking the poetic substance that characterizes my work.I improvise forms using a wide variety of materials and found objects, though it is not necessarily for the object itself, but for how its shape, texture, or irregularity fills the space. It is about its form and presence, and not about a concept or meaning. My creative process is basically an intimate dialog with the materials; I deliberately avoid conceptualizations, messages, meanings and symbolism. Instead, I pursue the outlandish poetry and narrative that we all experience in the realm of dreams.
Robert L. Pepper
Robert L. Pepper, is a Brooklyn born artist/musician, based in New York City. His works include oil, and acrylic paintings, films, and experimental music recordings. His work is abstract in nature while using various symbols and occult references. His portraits are a breakdown of the subject’s personality into abstract designs and esoteric symbols. His musical projects include Pas Musique, The Jazzfakers, Eyryx, and Zoku Metsu. Robert has performed and displayed art in over 18 countries.
When the viewer looks at my work, they are presented with many intertwining and interacting forms. These forms make up scenes and imaginary beings, which are part of an internal world that I have created. Many people have their television world, I have decided, through painting to create my own world. All these scenes originate from deep within my mind. I am inspired by 'tribal designs' from all over our globe, ancient texts, microcosm, macrocosm, and occult symbolism. I try to create something mysterious, provocative, and intriguing out of the simplicity of these forms, as well as displaying a story for the viewer to decipher for themselves.
