About this Event
We are welcoming visitors to the NEW Diglis fish pass in Worcester! Your visit starts on Diglis lock island in the middle of the River Severn, accessed via crossing the lock gates. Here you will visit the renovated Victorian workshop and find out about the history of this manmade island. We will explain how a rare species of fish – the twaite shad – was impacted when the weirs were built on the River Severn in the 1840’s including Diglis weir and lock island. You will learn how we are finally restoring access to their historic spawning grounds, and improving connectivity for all fish on the river, via building innovative fish passes.
This tour includes a 10 to 15 minute walk along the riverside path to our new Diglis fish pass – the biggest of its kind in England and Wales. You will have the chance to descend down beneath the surface of the river into our unique underwater viewing gallery and you may be lucky to spot some wild fish swimming through the pass!
Visit www.unlockingthesevern.co.uk for more information about our project to unlock the UK’s longest river for people and wildlife and other ways that you can get involved.
Unlocking the Severn is a conservation and river engagement project being delivered by Canal & River Trust, with partners Severn Rivers Trust, Environment Agency and Natural England. This project is made possible through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the European Union LIFE programme.
