Synopsis
Digital forensics is moving beyond traditional computers into a world of embedded and connected devices. This talk examines how core forensic principles apply to embedded systems, and why conventional approaches often fall short in these constrained and highly customised environments. Focusing on embedded Linux platforms, custom firmware, and diverse storage technologies, the session will highlight key technical and investigative challenges.
Attendees will gain practical insight into data extraction methods, from logical acquisition through to more invasive techniques, alongside reverse engineering approaches and essential forensic considerations. The talk will also address volatile and non-volatile memory forensics, encryption, and the growing use of secure hardware. Real-world case studies will illustrate how embedded devices can provide crucial evidential value and open new opportunities for digital investigations.
About the speaker
Chris Treglohan is a digital forensics specialist and Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire, where he focuses on cyber security and digital forensics.
He previously held a senior role within the UK government, establishing and leading a nationally recognised digital forensics research and development capability that supported law enforcement and government investigations. His work includes pioneering research into the forensic exploitation of embedded systems, enabling investigators to unlock new evidential sources in complex cases.
With a background in physics, electronics, and software engineering, he brings a deep technical understanding of modern digital systems, and his contributions have informed operational capabilities used nationally and internationally.
