Join Denver Museum of Nature & Science as we welcome back Dr. Ka Chun Yu, Assistant Curator of Space Sciences, and Bob Raynolds, Geology Research Associate, for another chapter of Digital Earth, featuring Venice, one of the world’s most remarkable and resilient urban landscapes.
Visitors to the Museum’s temporary exhibition Changing Landscapes: Inside Venice, Mesa Verde, and Rapa Nui (included with general admission through January 3, 2027), can experience Venice through immersive digital technology and discover how climate change is affecting this iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this special program, we will take a deeper dive into the science, history and geology connected to the exhibition’s Venice experience.
Long celebrated as a maze of canals, bridges and waterways unlike anywhere else on Earth, Venice has always been defined by its relationship with water. Since antiquity, the lagoon surrounding the city has served as both protector and threat—shielding Venice from enemies while also creating persistent challenges from flooding and inundation.
Using immersive visualizations and stunning 360° photography, this program will bring Venice’s landscapes and waterways to life while examining the natural forces and human ingenuity that shaped the city. We will also explore the challenges facing Venice today as rising seas and changing climate conditions place increasing pressure on historic places around the world.
