DIASPORA SHOWCASE AFRICA : Sound & Style 2

Colorful fabrics, formed draperies, elegant construction comes to Tucson, as a world class lineup of models, artists and designers converge in the valley, on October 12 at the Diaspora Showcase Africa at Pima Community College Center For The Arts. Award-winning fashion designers, Kwame Koranteng from Ghana, Maria K. Adeeko from Nigeria and Else Hardjopawiro from Suriname, Mafi from Ethiopia, and Fraouque Abdela from Tanzania will share the fashion runway spotlight.

The theme of this year’s show, “Sounds and Style Revisited”, presents a string arrangements of songs popularized by the legendary South African artist, Miriam Makeba. Produced by Kwevi Quaye and featuring kora instrumentalists, Karamo Susso from Mali, guitarists Fernando Perdomo from the movie. “Echo In The Canyon”, Grammy award-winning percussionist Munyungo Jackson, and Jason Tambo from The Congo. This acoustic interpretation is slated to thrill, bringing new colors and textures to Miriam Makeba’s songs.

Since 2004, Diaspora Showcase Africa has presented many notable African and international artists, and collections of award-winning designers that have been featured in several prints and broadcast media, including VOGUE, ESSENCE, Black Elegance, THE NEW YORKER, CNN and ELLE. Models at the Diaspora Showcase Africa fashion show are selected from Arizona and international modeling agencies. A preview of the fashion collections can be seen on Friday, October 11, during a photoshoot session at Snooze on Grant Road. And the main event on Saturday, October 12 at 6pm at The Pima Community College Center For The Arts.
