About this Event
VASC Distinguished Lecture, Diane Apostolos-Cappadona, "Whose Magdalene is she anyway?"
Room A114, Smith Hall of Art
The Corcoran's Visiting Artists & Scholars Committee invites you to join us for a lecture by GW alumna and Georgetown Professor Emerita Diane Apostolos-Cappadona.Mary Magdalene's many complex roles in Christian history from faithful apostle and seductress to feminist icon have projected a fascinating journey from the earliest scriptural references to the texts of the Church Fathers to later theological interpretations. Visual images have created a Mary Magdalene who may be far different from the real woman, the first witness of the Resurrection in the gospels, or even from descriptions in legendary narratives, medieval theatre, and 20th-century cinema. Since the late 20th century, Mary Magdalene has emerged as a powerful feminist icon, the closest person to Jesus himself, with a rich and varied visual history.
