Join celebrated dancer Purvadhanashree as she traces the spiritual, ritualistic, and emotive dimensions of Vilasini Natyam, the classical dance tradition of the Telugu Kalavatis.
Taking a leaf from the sacred traditions of temple dance of Telugu-speaking regions, ace dancer Purvadhanashree presents a recital that explores the layered vocabulary of Vilasini Natyam. The evening opens with Vinayaka Prarthana, an invocation preceded by shlokas dedicated to the seven musical notes and the instruments that guide the dancer’s rhythm. It then moves into Churnika and Shabda Pallavi, ritual segments once offered in temples, where movement is shaped by the form’s distinctive body technique.
The repertoire continues with Salaam Daruvu, reimagining a royal praise song as an offering to Lord Shiva, followed by an intimate Padam from the chamber tradition of Meyzuvani, expressing the loneliness of a wife adrift in worldly wealth. The performance concludes with a Keertanam by Sadashiva Brahmendra, recalling the Pallaki Seva tradition of temple presentation.
Through these pieces, Purvadhanashree offers audiences a rare glimpse into Vilasini Natyam’s expressive range, from prayer and ritual to devotion and human emotion.
This performance is supported by Reliance Foundation.
