Diabetes Education sessions for Schools
About this Event
Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital Paediatric Diabetes Education for Schools
We are pleased to invite you to our School Study Morning. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the management of Type 1 Diabetes during an in-person event led by staff from the Child and Young People's Diabetes service at the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital. The event will focus on offering information on managing Type 1 Diabetes in a school setting, with focus on the new technology that young people are using with increased frequency - such as Hybrid Closed Loop Pumps. There will be interactive elements to the session, with the aim of increasing the confidence of school staff in using Diabetes technology.
There will be teaching and practical skills assessments for a number of Diabetes-related tasks including:
How to give an insulin injection
How to administer Glucagon
How to check a blood glucose and ketone levels
Pump skills (Administer a bolus, input carbs, use 'activity' mode).
There will also be theory teaching from our Diabetes Nursing team, and our Diabetes Dietitians .
Timings
The Education sessions will run from 09:30 - 13:00 and is open to staff from Nurseries, Primary and Secondary Schools who have a young person under the Paediatric Diabetes Team at the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital.
Who can attend?
A maximum of two members of staff* from each school are welcome to attend. We have invited all schools who have a young person under the Child and Young Person's Diabetes Team at the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital. We recommend that the staff who are most likely to be supporting this young person with their day-to-day Diabetes management are the staff members to attend the day, where possible.
*Please note, if you have more than one pupil at your school who is receiving care from the Child and Young Person's Diabetes Team at the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital then two members of staff per pupil are welcome to attend.
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer places to non-school staff, or to any teams from schools where you do not have a pupil under our team.
If you have more than two members of staff who would like to attend then please email us at [email protected] and we can add your school to a waiting list in case places become available.
