Dia de los Niñes: A Latin Jewish Family Festival

Did you know there are close to 17,000 Latin Jews in the Bay? Join us for an afternoon of celebrating our Latin Jewish families, and learn about Olamim’s latest research findings on how Bay Area Latin Jewish families navigate our many identities while raising resilient, rooted and joyful children. Research presentation by Olamim’s founder and executive director, Ariela Ronay-Jinich, M.A.Ed; VOCES community media work by Dr. Analucia Lopezrevoredo, founder and directora ejecutiva of Jewtina y Co., and guest speaker Dr. Priya Mariana Driscoll of Mills College. We’ll have antojitos, pozole, and a wonderful bilingual children’s program for your kids. What is el día de los niños? El día de los niños is a celebration based on childhood and literacy that began in 1997. Borrowing from the traditional Mexican holiday "El día de los niños," the American version expanded to include literacy when acclaimed author Pat Mora took up the cause in 1997. A year later, the U.S. Congress officially designated April 30 as "Day of the Child."

Why niñes instead of niños? While the term niños (when referring to many children) is gender neutral, it still uses a gendered (masculine) term. Niñes is a modern approach to gender-neutral language that refers to children (plural) in a grammatically gender-neutral way.
