Dia de los Muertos (K-12) Art Contest by Northgate González Market

Have your students bring out their paints crayons and colored pencils! It’s time to enter the Northgate González Market 5th Annual Día de los Muertos Art Contest! 

Theme: Recordar es Vivir  

The coming together with family and friends to remember those who have passed away is a powerful act of remembrance. It involves keeping their memory alive through storytelling. The magic of storytelling allows individuals to relive past experiences in their minds share those stories with others and experience the emotions they felt during those memories. Moreover it provides those who never had the chance to meet these individuals with an opportunity to know them and imagine what they were like.

In essence building an altar is a form of storytelling. It involves creating a space with their favorite foods a picture of them and other items that hold personal significance. Each item placed on the altar carries a memory connected to it ensuring that those memories will be told or thought about.

This year let’s encourage artists to paint one of their favorite memories with a loved one who has passed away. It could be a portrait of their parent’s late loved one even if they never had the chance to meet them but have heard stories about them. By changing the imagery from previous years to something that truly reflects a story we can create a more meaningful and impactful memorial. 

Entry Period. Entries in the Northgate Gonzalez Market Día de los Muertos Art Contest must be submitted by Monday April 28th 2025. 

Eligibility. The Art Contest is open to Elementary School Middle School and High School Students in one of the following counties: Los Angeles Orange Riverside San Bernardino and San Diego

Art Mediums. Paintings drawings and collages prints (etching lithography screen-print and woodcut) or 2- dimensional mixed media. Any sort of digital media is excluded from the contest. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting graphic or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student or was created using a deep learning AI is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted. Students should only submit artwork they will not need for other purposes. Artwork depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature is not allowed.
