BEFORE there was Roy Rogers...
BEFORE there was John Wayne...
There was a cowboy named Tom MIx who fell in love with a little gal from Dewey, Oklahoma - and he married her and became a lawman BEFORE his days in Hollywood!
Tom Mix and Olive Stokes were a prominent couple of the silent film era, whose lives and romance heavily shaped the early days of the Hollywood Western.
Olive Stokes, an Oklahoma rancher's daughter born in the Indian Territory, married silent film star Tom Mix on January 10, 1909, in Medora, North Dakota.
The couple lived on Olive’s family ranch in Dewey, Oklahoma. During this time, Tom became a champion rodeo rider and served as Dewey's night marshal.
Olive and Tom acted together in early Selig Polyscope Company shorts and Westerns. They had a daughter, Ruth Mix, who was born in July 1912 and later went on to act in Western films herself.
Tom's rising fame and an on-set relationship with actress Victoria Forde ultimately led to Tom and Olive's divorce in 1917. Following the divorce, Olive never remarried, remaining a fiercely independent businesswoman and a Hollywood fixture who was a close friend to stars like Gene Autry and Elvis Presley.
She lived until 1972 and co-authored the book The Fabulous Tom Mix to preserve his legacy. For a look into the real-life ranch origins that Tom Mix and Olive Stokes brought to the big screen, click the link below:
