J.D. Dillard’s aerial stunner Devotion is a thoughtful tribute to two of the Korean War’s most celebrated wingmen, one of whom was the navy's first black aviator, Jesse Brown. A solid, straight-laced story, it does not shy away from the realities of war or the 1950s, or such truths as how Brown unsurprisingly had to overcome a gross amount of racism to achieve his dreams of flying, and reaching those goals did not suddenly stop this ignorance. Jesse's courage and tenacity have opened doors for countless others. While Devotion may not look to reinvent its genre, it does carve out its own space in 2022’s impressive slate of war films. Once it finds its wings in the final act, it soars to a place of real power.
