About this course
This introductory course will focus on how humans grow and change over the course of their lives, but with a particular focus on child development. Various areas of Developmental Psychology will be explored, as we will look at how innate mechanisms (nature) and life experiences (nurture) impact upon development.
Different areas of Developmental Psychology will be studied, including prenatal and early postnatal development, cognitive development, emotional development, theory of mind, attachment theory, and language development. The course will cover many famous studies and theories, as well as contemporary issues, with a main focus on childhood, a period during which the most change occurs.
Learners will understand what development and Developmental Psychology is. They will discover and discuss several key experiments and studies as well as the theories behind them, including the work of famous developmental psychologists such as Piaget. Contemporary research will also be considered.
By the end of the course, you will:
- Be able to define what is meant by Developmental Psychology
- Be able to discuss the Nature Nurture debate and have an opinion on their influence on development.
- Be able to describe different ways that researchers study development.
- Be able to display knowledge of prenatal development.
- Be able to evaluate Piaget’s account of cognitive development.
- Be able to explain Theory of Mind.
