Developing Shame Resilience through Group Therapy

There will be 2 demonstration groups during the workshop. Participants are encouraged to volunteer in these experiential groups.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to define shame as a factor in group dynamics.
2. Participants will be able to identify at least two of the most common shame triggers in group dynamics.
3. Participants will be able to define the concept of shame resilience.
4. Participants will learn at least three essential interventions that reduce shame and promote shame resilience.

Presenter: Rena Pollak, LMFT, CGP

Rena Pollak, LMFT, CGP has dedicated herself to the practice of interpersonal group therapy since her traineeship in 2010, creating the longest running process group in her counseling center’s 20 year history.  She provides group therapy as well as individual and couple’s counseling in her private practice in California.  In addition to leading process groups, Rena has led cancer support groups, child and adolescent grief groups, parenting groups and will soon be offering shame resilience groups.  She spent five years on the board of the Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles and two years on the board of SFV-CAMFT.  Rena’s work is strongly influenced by her artistic journey as an actor and writer.  Creativity cannot be expressed without the risk of self-exposure and its proximity to shame.  Building resilience to shame is the gateway to freedom to be your fullest self.
