'Deutsche Runde': The German Geals

Have you ever heard of Na Gàidheileamailtich or The German Gaels? The term refers to the high number of Germans who love Scotland and are specifically interested in Gaelic. In 2010, a documentary of the same title, which aired on BBC Alba, investigated this phenomenon and presented lots of Germans involved in Gaelic language and culture. Some of them have risen to be renowned experts in Gaelic media, literature, teaching, music and technology but many more are learning the lingo for leisure and enjoy using it when travelling to Scotland and especially the Highlands and Islands. But what is it that attracts them to those regions and why are they making such an effort to learn a minority language that isn’t exactly famous for being easy to pick up?
On the flipside of this phenomenon, there is a considerable number of Gaelic speakers who also show an interest in German and often have a great command of the language. Some say that the languages are ‘close’ and that it is easier to acquire one when you know the other. But is this linguistically true and are there similarities between Gaelic and German in terms of vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation?
Whatever your experience with Gaelic so far and whether you have heard about the German Gaels before or not, you are most welcome to join us in exploring this phenomenon at June’s Deutsche Runde as part of WestFest. Suitable for German speakers from B1 upwards. No Gaelic required – but very much welcome!
Deutsche Runde is an informal gathering and exchange around a chosen topic of German language or culture. It is ideal for learners with some knowledge of German (B1 and higher). This event is held in German.
