The next title in Melbourne Civic Theatre's series of new play readings will be DEUCE by Terrence McNally, performed on Saturday, June 6th at 2 p.m. at the theatre in downtown Melbourne. THE STORY: Warmly funny and unexpectedly touching, DEUCE tells the story of retired tennis stars Leona Mullen and Midge Barker, who once made up a championship doubles team. When they meet again at the U.S. Open, the women—now at the end of their lives—find themselves trying to make sense of the professional partnership that brought them to the top of the sports world in their youth.
The cast for this reading is extra-special. It marks the return to MCT's stage of Joan Taddie, Brevard County theater royalty, for the first time since our reading of THE TREASURER in 2019. She's joined center stage by Kate Schwartz, another longtime veteran of Brevard's stages. Rounding out the cast are Stefani Bush, Jim Warrack and Nick Henn.

DEUCE began previews on Broadway in April of 2007, starring theater legends Angela Lansbury as blue collar Leona Mullen and Marian Seldes as well-bred Midge Barker. The production marked Lansbury's first time on the Broadway stage since her performance in the 1983 revival of MAME, and she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.
Playwright Terrence McNally (1938-2020) was the recipient of the 2019 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement, the 2019 Dramatist Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, and the 2019 Lucille Lortel Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. MCT staged his comedy IT'S ONLY A PLAY in 2018, and our series included a stellar reading of his MOTHERS AND SONS in 2017.
