About this Event
Detroit’s own Rebecca Goldberg will lead a series of 6 bimonthly soundwalks in her latest endeavor, Detroit Frequency. For the 5th installment Rebecca will focus on pedestrians sound at the Dequindre Cut.
The Dequindre Cut Greenway is a paved path nearly 2 miles long in downtown Detroit. The trail has separate lanes for bicyclists and pedestrians. At the trail’s southern end lies the Detroit River, a key part of the Great Lakes system and an international border; across the water is the City of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. Near Atwater Street, an easy connection can be made to the Detroit RiverWalk, which follows the river and links Milliken State Park, numerous plazas and pocket parks, and the Renaissance Center. At its northern end is Eastern Market, a commercial district centered around a popular six-block farmers market that has been in operation since 1891.
A soundwalk is a walk where you focus on the sounds around you, and immerse yourself completely in the environment that you’re in. Soundwalking can be a very rejuvenating and meditative experience. As an ecological practice, soundwalking can be an entertainment or a method of inquiry, a call to action or a meditation. Soundwalks can play multiple roles all at once or shift intents from moment to moment. Deep, active listening can enrich and stimulate creative responses in day-to-day life, as well as inform the design of our built environment. Soundwalking can encourage greater care and respect for natural soundscapes as a part of human soundscapes, and awareness of how human soundscapes impact natural soundscapes.
Producer, live performer & DJ Rebecca Goldberg is known for her techno releases on Detroit Underground, and her performances around the globe. She’s also produced soundtracks, written original movie scores and is a graphic designer. Her latest project for the New BBC Radiophonic Workshop and their Travel Agency is yet another project that shows her range as a multidisciplinary artist which at the same time is very dear to her heart as it involves both her beloved home and her passion for experimental music.
Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, join me on Detroit Frequency's soundwalk!
