Inspired by thinkers like Lauren Berlant, Judith Butler, and Olaya Fernández Guerrero, ‘Desire & its Excess’ is a multidisciplinary event that explores the complexities of desire and its relationship with the Other.It showcases Lawrence Buttigieg’s long-term, practice-based research, which blends his architectural background with themes of identity, gender, and womanhood.
The project translates desire into a sensory experience, prompting audiences to reflect on their own feelings of want. The exhibition features paintings, box-assemblages, film, and interactive digital platforms that incorporate the collection and analysis of anonymised data, thus enhancing visitor engagement.
By revealing the fluid, illusory nature of desire and the shifting boundaries that exist between reality and fantasy, Desire challenges established narratives of truth, identity, and selfhood. It offers both an innovative artistic encounter and a critical contribution to contemporary discussions on gender, sexuality, and representation, making it a thought-provoking experience for a diverse and multifaceted audience.
