Designing Sanctuary: Creating Environments that Heal, Inspire and Transform

Environments designed as sanctuaries do more than serve functional needs—they encourage introspection, foster connection, and strengthen relationships. At the heart of this inquiry lies the spaces we inhabit daily, and this session seeks 

to examine how these environments influence psychological well-being, emotional resilience, and overall quality of life. 

Grounded in my personal experiences, my professional practice as a designer, and my research as a recent master's degree graduate, I will share insights into how intentional design fosters mental health, cultivates resilience, and encourages a sense of peace and harmony. Drawing on real-world case studies and personal narratives, this presentation provides strategies for creating spaces that support holistic well-being. 

By framing design as a vehicle for healing and growth, this session aims to inspire a deeper understanding of its potential to drive meaningful change. 

Lisa Kahn is the founder and principal of Finding Sanctuary by Lisa Kahn Designs, a boutique interior design firm established in 2000. Her practice is rooted in a philosophy that transcends aesthetics, focusing on creating environments that inspire well-being, foster intentional living, and cultivate a profound sense of sanctuary. Drawing on her extensive professional experience, advanced academic study—including a master’s degree and ongoing exploration of philosophy and neuroscience—Lisa integrates evidence-based insights into the transformative power of design to shape human experiences and promote well-being. 

Based in Naples, Florida with offices in Highlands, North Carolina and Chicago, Illinois, Lisa leads a multi-disciplinary team of accomplished professionals who provide innovative design solutions and comprehensive project management services for clients worldwide. Her work spans both residential and commercial projects, guided by the enduring belief that peace around us inspires peace within us.
