About this Event
Designing Mass Timber for the 21st Century.
Wood has become the material of choice for sustainably-minded designers due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, speed of construction, and positive environmental performance. This seminar is geared toward those Structural engineers and structural design technologists wanting to expand their proficiency and knowledge of timber engineering.
The attendees are expected to learn:
INTRODUCTION TO MASS TIMBER - DESIGN FOR GRAVITY LOADS
• General introduction to mass timber structures
• Stress grades and modification factors
• Compression design
• Bending design
• Combined axial and bending design
• Serviceability (deflection, creep, vibration)
CONNECTIONS IN MASS TIMBER
• General design concepts for the European Yield Model (EYM)
• Design approach for connections in CLT (Jx factor)
• Design of nails and spikes in CLT
• Design of bolted connections
• Design of lag screws
• Introduction to self-tapping screws
• Introduction to timber-concrete composite (TCC) floors
LATERAL LOAD DESIGN OF CLT SHEARWALL
• Introduction to the CSA provisions for CLT shearwalls
• Kinematic behaviour
• Segment aspect ratio
• Ductility
• Capacity-based design
• Analytical solutions (based on research)
• Application of design concepts and use of static equilibrium
8:00am - 4:00pm – includes breakfast, lunch, and coffee
Early Bird Cost: $249 +GST (Until Sept 24th, 2022)

Instructor: Ghasan Doudak, Ph. D., P. Eng.
Professor of Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering Department, University of Ottawa
Dr. Ghasan Doudak is full Professor of structural engineering at the University of Ottawa. His area of expertise includes multi-scale understanding of how complete structural systems function, encompassing issues such as how complete buildings respond to effects of wind storms, ground shaking during earthquakes, or other actions like impacts and blasts. Prior to joining the Engineering Faculty, Dr. Ghasan Doudak held the position of Manager, Wood and Structural Standards at the Canadian Wood Council.
He is a member of the National Building Code Standing Committee on Structural Design, CSA O86 Technical Committee on Engineering Design in Wood, CSA s850 Technical Committee on Blast Resistant Buildings, and board member and treasurer of Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering (CAEE).
