About this Event

Join AIA Milwaukee for an Earth Day event. For the last 25 years, WasteCap Resource Solutions provides waste reduction and diversion assistance to facility management, design, construction and demolition teams to achieve economic, environmental, or third-party certification goals.

Design and construction teams are in the unique position of preparing buildings and environments for their clients' use for the next 20 to 100 years. The construction of a building and its eventual destruction will account for a significant portion of the overall environmental impact of the building, but the choices made in its design and layout will also determine whether the owners and operators will be limited or supported in their waste reduction efforts as they change over time.

We will cover broadly the opportunities for efficiencies in the design, construction, and demolition phases of a building, as well as the background market conditions that affect the ability to reduce waste in these phases.

  • Key principles in design: simplicity, flexibility, unit dimensions.
  • Key principles in operations: variety, communication, accessibility.
  • Key principles in construction: order control, rejection/return, planning.
  • Key principles in demolition: deconstruction/reuse/salvage, staging, predictive analytics

While many of these concepts should already be familiar to architects and contractors, some are likely to be new, while the rest will prove a reminder not to forget them in the push to complete a project.

Schedule: 4:00pm gather, 4:30pm presentation, 5:30pm networking, 6:00pm end

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess with the client the variety of waste streams that need to be managed by a facility, based on current and future markets, and incorporate design elements that allow future growth and adaptability in the facilities waste management.
  • Identify ways in which the design could cripple the user's ability to divert waste, using example situations from existing projects, to better inform their clients of alternatives to the project scope or layout.
  • Critique construction and demolition waste management plans for their effectiveness in diverting project waste, using the schedule and existing markets as a guide, to meet or exceed the project's diversion goals.

Submitted for AIA/CES approval.
