Without the railroad, Derby, Kansas, would have no history. Established as “El Paso,” the town’s history would have been drastically different without the trains…if it had even survived. In the late 1800s, railroads were the most powerful industrial influence in the country, literally determining the success or failure of many towns throughout settlement of the Great Plains. The impact that railroads had on Derby’s history will be the subject of a presentation at the Derby Historical Museum on Sept. 14. The program, prepared by Butch Ewing, President of the Derby Historical Society, will include information about the rail industry of the late 1800s … its function in settlement of the Great Plains, and how it shaped Derby’s history. Part of the discussion will center around the city’s name-change and the verbal history that has been repeated for generations pertaining to that situation.
“Derby’s History Came On the Train,” should be of interest to anyone who would like to learn more about Derby’s history, as well as to those who are railroad enthusiasts. Admission is free and the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
