Who will be crowned winner of Dept of Rock 2024? Who will have the most fun along the way? We’ve had 4 heats and watched 24 incredible bands play their hearts out at Smith’s in October. We're now down to 12 bands in 2 semi-finals and these public service rockstars are soooo ready to play and slay their way into 4 spots in the grand final on 8 December. Come cheer them on and be part of the Dept of Rock fun!
Dept of Rock Battle of the Bands is a feel-good and friendly band competition at Canberra’s favourite live music venue Smith’s Alternative. Our aim is to showcase and encourage amateur musos working in government, while smashing some myths about boring public servants and raising some money for local charities. Sure it’s a competition but it’s not really about winning or losing – Dept of Rock is about having a go, getting creative, connecting with others and having loads of fun with music.
Semi Final 2 Bands
Tuesday Weld Experience
The Tuesday Weld Experience play ….well it’s hard to explain, but imagine a mix of original long, lonesome broken-hearted country-esque tunes along with upbeat poppy songs, all topped off with a Jimmy Page-inspired lead guitar for some extra sizzle.
The Tracked Changes
The Tracked Changes are a new band formed especially for the Dept of Rock competition. Four friends from Australian Border Force and Home Affairs, a mixture of seasoned performers and brand new talents, come together united in their love of good music and fun times.
Phoenix Bureau
Phoenix Bureau rose from the ashes of a former band torn apart by the rock gods. But with successful recruitment they are now brimming with talento, gusto and APS-innuendo. This four-piece are an eclectic group of current and former public servants that want to make you move – to dance, to laugh, maybe even move you to tears. With inspiration drawing from pop, indie, rock, blues and metal, you never know what they’ll submit next; but rest assured it will fun, feisty and possibly zombified.
The Shadies
The Shadies is an inclusive, fun loving ukulele band which was set up by Dept of Environment staff over seven years ago and has followed them through their various machinations and movements in and out of other departments. They have circled back to the beginning and are found playing at lunchtimes in the shade of the trees outside their office in Barton. The Shadies play anything and everything with their own special interpretation and welcome musicians and wanna-be musicians from across their department. They even have a few alumni who keep coming back to sing and strum.
Dumpster Fires
Consisting of 4 teachers and one ex-student who has returned to the school to work in classroom support, the Dumpster Fires normally subject the students of their school to their unpolished covers. They have decided to be bold and take their lack of talents to the big stage to impress other members of the ACT public service with a haphazard approach to professionalism and music ability and have some fun along the way!
FOI Fighters
A ‘tiger team' formed especially for Dept of Rock from members of various public service joints including Finance, Health, and the Arts. With an Agile project management mindset, they have envisioned, speculated, explored and adapted - and now they’re ready to close.
