Critically lauded turn-of-the-century Bella Union 6-Music pioneering prog pop indie darlings Departure Lounge come to the Betsey for their first live show since 2019, ahead of a new (fifth) album and autumn tours of Ireland and the UK. They will play songs from the forthcoming album, choice cuts from 2021's 'Transmeridian' and some old favourites from back in the day.
“Some of the most wonderful, eclectic, optimistic pop music being created at the moment” (The Sunday Times)
“Sophisticated angst-pop, grounded by classic songwriting skills” (Mojo)
Departure Lounge’s initial active period lasted from 1998 to 2002, during which time they released three acclaimed albums: the self-released Out of Here (1999) followed by Jetlag Dreams (2001) and Too Late To Die Young (2002) on Bella Union.
They toured with Morcheeba, Paul Heaton, Robyn Hitchcock and The Go-Betweens, hosted a residency in Nashville, played at Benicassim and La Route du Rock festivals in France and Spain, scored a number one alternative radio hit in Belgium with the lolloping 'King Kong Frown' and the haunting 'Alone Again And' was used in Hollywood smash 'The Butterfly Effect'.
After a seventeen year hiatus they reunited in 2019 for live shows in the UK to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut and in March 2021 released a fourth album, Transmeridian on Violette Records.
Now wholly based in Worthing & London, UK, Departure Lounge are Tim Keegan (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Chris Anderson (piano, keyboards, guitar, saxophone, vocals), Lindsay Jamieson (drums, percussion, piano, keyboards, flute, vocals) and Simon Edwards (bass guitar, double bass, mandolin, guitar, keyboards).
RIYL: Mercury Rev, R.E.M., Beta Band, Talk Talk, Tunng, Kid Loco.
Extremely high quality support from Andrew Rumsey and David Perry:
"Such a lovely record... charming, rough hewn and oaky. Recommended." (Mark Ellen, Word In Your Ear)
"Hushed, haunted and shiver-inducing" (Alexis Petridis, The Guardian)
