About this Event
Sing democracy songs at the Petworth Neighborhood Library on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 12 p.m. in a free family concert with The Civic Circle. The event will be outdoors and is geared to kids from Pre-K to 5th grade.
Kids are invited to sing, move and clap along as performers Munit Mesfin and Bomani D. Armah sing about the seven "steps to democracy." Families will learn about civility (Listen!), understanding the news (Learn!), voting (Choose!), volunteering (Join!), advocacy (Speak!), organizing (Act!), and public service (Lead!).
Mesfin is an award-winning Ethiopian singer, songwriter, and teaching artist. Her performances blend her Ethiopian roots with the music she loves–roots, soul, reggae. Mesfin has a focus on social issues and female empowerment.
Armah is a Hip-Hop artist. Raised in Prince George’s County Maryland, Armah is a fixture in the Maryland Art-Education, Hip-Hop and poetry scene. Armah is best known his viral 2007 crunk-rap single and video, “Read a Book”. He is also a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist and formerly the Director of Poetry Events for Busboys and Poets.
The Civic Circle is a Silver Spring, Maryland nonprofit that uses music and the arts to empower young students to understand and participate in democracy. While many existing civic education programs focus largely on high school students, The Civic Circle breaks new ground by getting kids excited about democracy at an early age.
