Democracy: Does it work?

On 4th July, the United Kingdom will go to the polls for the 2024 general election, with many people unconvinced by the power of democracy to find solutions to today’s problems.

In an interactive conversation with an expert panel, we will explore the promise and the limitations of our democratic system.

Our panel:

• Amira Campbell, President of the University of Birmingham Student Guild.
• Jeremy Williams, Associate Professor in Philosophy at the University of Birmingham, whose research considers how we ought to talk and make decisions about divisive issues.
• Dr Patricia Correa, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Aston University, whose main research interests are on the internal organisation and behaviour of political parties.
• Siobhan Harper-Nunes, the Green Party Candidate for West Midlands Mayor and someone with over 20 years experience working with charities and community organisations to support people in our most left behind communities.

The event will begin and end with a live spoken word performance from Bilal Akram.

• Donation ticket, where you can select how much to pay

As a registered charity, all revenue generated from tickets will go, in full, towards supporting Philosophers' Yard events and activities.
