About this Event
This training session is organised by the Civil Society, Development and Democracy (CDD) Pathway and is open to all ESRC and non-ESRC funded PhD and MA Social Science Research students within the WRDTP’s seven partner universities. Whilst this workshop is aimed at CDD Pathway students, PGRs from all seven interdisciplinary Pathways are welcome to attend. The format of this session is a panel discussion and conversation, with time for networking over refreshments. This session is hybrid - you will get the most out of the session if you attend in-person, but we will also be hosting the session through Zoom if you require.
2024 is widely recognized as a vital year to assess the state of democracy around the world. Numerous elections across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas have put democratic traditions and processes to the test. Invited experts with specialisms in elections from various regions of the world will explore the state of democracy in 2024, the key challenges to democracy, and the complexities of studying elections and democracy during a time of rapid political change.
Learning outcomes are:
- Develop a broad understanding of the health and functioning of democracy and democratic elections in different global contexts.
- Develop critical understandings of the challenges and opportunities in studying elections and electoral outcomes in differing (geo)political contexts.
