About this Event
Charlotte is about to spend millions of your tax dollars on a massive police training complex. Most people have no idea it's happening. That's what we're here to fix.
On May 21, the Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners holds its public budget hearing for FY2027 — one of the only times all year they're required to sit and hear directly from residents. Four days before that vote, we're getting informed and getting ready.
Demand A People's Budget is a community teach-in covering what Cop City CLT actually is, what it costs, and what gets cut to pay for it.
Here's what the night looks like:
TEACH-IN: What Cop City CLT is, where the money comes from, and what it displaces. Short, sourced, and straight to the point.
PUBLIC COMMENT CLINIC: The BOCC hearing is four days away. Walk in tonight not knowing what to say, walk out with a 3-minute statement drafted and practiced.
WHEATPASTE ART BUILD: Learn to make wheatpaste posters from scratch. Supplies provided. Finished work hits the streets before Wednesday and walks into the hearing room on May 21.
POTLUCK: Bring a dish if you can. Food table is open all night.
This event is for people who are brand new to this issue and people who've been tracking it for months. Come as you are. Bring someone who's been meaning to pay attention.
Free and open to everyone.
After tonight: BOCC Budget Hearing | Wednesday, May 21 | 600 E. 4th St., Charlotte NC
Hosted by Meck for Change.
