Delhi Margazhi Mahotsavam – A Feast of Carnatic Music!
In its endeavor to present rich hues of the Indian performing arts Banyan Tree has launched several thematic festivals in its journey of more than 29 glorious years. Dakshinayan, the festival dedicated to Carnatic music (South Indian Classical Music), was one of the most sought-after events that was presented for 16 years in Northern India (Mumbai, Delhi and Pune). Inspired by the famous Chennai Music season, four years ago, Banyan Tree enhanced the experience of Dakshinayan by creating an aptly titled Mumbai Margazhi Mahotsavam that is presented in the pious Margazhi month. In this month, Earth is the closest to the sun, so the maximum pull of the sun’s gravity happens at this time. That is the effect the Margazhi month has on the human system – it pulls you from the base. It is a time to bring balance and stability to the system. One of the ways to bring stability is by practicing of Indian classical music. This month is considered very significant for spiritual Sadhna, also has several festivals and of course lends itself to Carnatic music concerts too since most of the compositions in this genre are deeply devotional.
